Their last album came out in 1987, but some activity online have fans and other New Wave bands in anticipation for The Cars potential announcement. Mainly, a picture of the surviving members was posted to the bands Facebook page with no comment underneath. With over two decades since their last release, the band is playing together in the studio. At first thought, this was “greatest hits” record written all over it, but The Cars have had over twenty years to do that. We’re thinking they’re planning a reunion tour.
With timeless acts such as Aerosmith and Kiss rocking the entire country this Summer, maybe it inspired the New Wave rockers to get back into gear? Now normally just a photograph wouldn’t inspire such a buzz, but it kind of escalated with the note written directly below the picture,
“Anyone in the mood for a reunion by the Cars?”
With classics such as Just What I Needed and Drive (which are free music downloads on Kazaa), the Cars didn’t do much in establishing New Wave, but were one of the pioneer acts in getting it to the mainstream. Them along with bands such as Depeche Mode revolutionized the typical 4-piece rock band with synth-phonics, keyboards, and drum machines. What was unique about The Cars is that they brought both the rock band and the keyboards to their records, and in that time, nobody came close to impersonating their sound.
If they were to come back for a tour, it would be one member short. Their bassist died of Pancreatic cancer in 2000, shattering all hopes for a full reunion. Regardless, fans of New Wave have a reason to keep their ears open for more information about the Cars.
Here is a performance of one of their classics in 1978, My Best Friend’s Girl. Keep in mind, this was over 30 years ago:
