Kelly Clarkson: “Mr. Know It All” a Copy of Bruno Mars Hit?

Is Kelly Clarkson's new single too similar to a Bruno Mars hit?

In many ways, 2011 is shaping up to be a comeback year for Kelly Clarkson, the singer that many fans still regard as the most talented American Idol winner in the show’s history. However, with the release of her new single, “Mr. Know It All,” the singer is facing controversy, including accusations of plagiarism.

The lead track from Clarkson’s upcoming album Stronger, due in October, “Mr. Know It All” takes a break from Clarkson’s usual guitar-driven pop-rock sound and instead goes for a mellower vibe, with semi-spoken lyrics and piano accents. Likable even though it fails to spotlight Clarkson’s famously strong pipes, the real problem with the song is how closely its music arrangement and vocal lines resemble Bruno Mars’s hit “Just The Way You Are.”

In 2009, Clarkson found herself tangled in plagiarism controversy over another single, “Already Gone.” Clarkson publicly spoke out about her dislike of the track, stating that the song’s co-writer, OneRepublic leader Ryan Tedder, had drawn so heavily from another of his hits, Beyoncé’s “Halo,” that fans would resent her for copying the popular song. Clarkson even refused to perform the single during television appearances. Tedder denied the plagiarism accusation.

In light of her previous stance against copying another hit song—and we agree with her that “Already Gone” did sound very much like “Halo”—we’re surprised to hear how similar Clarkson’s new “Mr. Know It All” is to Bruno Mars’s hit “Just The Way You Are.”

Listen to both songs here at Kazaa, or check out the video below, and tell us if you think Clarkson and her songwriters have copied Mars’s recipe for success.

About Karen

Ignoring annoyed neighbors' pleas to "turn that noise down," Karen is constantly busy reviewing new music (loudly), checking out cool concerts (and, well, some not-so-cool concerts, too), and generally stuffing her brain with as much music-related info as possible. Kelly Clarkson rules! I love her voice and new song. Kelly didn’t write it so I don’t know how you can say she “plagiarized” it. I don’t hear the same song or lyrics that you mentioned. Some notes in a lot of songs sound the same. Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream starts out just like Kelly’s song MLWSWY. I guess this happens in music. I love Kelly Clarkson and her unique voice. I already pre-ordered her new album and EP. She has the best voice in the industry, and she is my favorite artist.

There is a mashup youtube video now with a Bruno’s acapella version of Just the Way You Are put on top of the intrumental karaoke version of Kelly Clarkson’s Mr Know It All.

In addition earlier this year, Kelly was accused of stealing a Arcade Fire song so it seems to me that she is becoming a copy-holic.

yep, I heard the Clarkson song on the radio earlier today and it jumped out at me instantly.

Chriss, commenting earlier, is a prime example of someone who knows absolutely nothing about music and how it’s constructed. It’s nothing to do with the melody or lyrics; listen a little deeper. This is SUCH a blatant rip off that I don’t know how Clarkson is getting away with it. The chord progression is exactly the same, the arrangement is exactly the same, the way the drums change on the chorus is exactly the same. I can’t remember ever hearing such a blatant rip.

In the beginning, Kelly Clarkson was such a good singer and her songs were original, but now she’s following in the footsteps of Britney Spears. She keeps ripping off other artists songs.
It’s bad enough that her one song sounded a lot like Beyonce’s Halo, as well as another song sounding like an Arcade Fire song, but to come out with another song that sounds like yet another rip off is ridiculous.
The sound of Mr. Know It All sounds too much like Bruno Mars’ Just The Way You Are, but the chorus is also reminiscent of Beyonce’s If I Were A Boy, in my opinion.

I just wish that artists could be more original and write their own music, as opposed to ripping off other artists. It’s no wonder I hate listening to the radio nowadays, all the songs sound the same !

The tracks for her current album were selected well before the album was produced.  The album was finished a full year before the release date.  At the time, Just The Way You Are may have already been out, I don’t know, but Kelly is true artist, despite the rip-off accusations and similarities of some of her songs to others.  These accusations could be leveled at any major artist today – same beats, same chord progressions, same melodies, etc.  Similarities happen – you can’t be aware of every song in the world, so avoiding copying some aspect of another song is impossible.
