Although it was highly speculated that Chris Issak would be taking the 4th seat as the American Idol judge to replace Simon Cowell, it has officially been announced that he will not be a judge in the upcoming season. Instead of Chris Issak, America will have the privilege of watching Steven Tyler, front man of the legendary rock group Aerosmith, critically judge contestants and their vocal capabilities. Aerosmith is on tour right now for the duration of the Summer, and it’s going rather well as compared to their last live performances where Tyler broke a hip and Perry sprained his wrist. Fortunately this new gig for Tyler doesn’t involve that much physical responsibility.
Tyler has surpassed plenty of expectations during his career as the leader of Aerosmith, but also is no stranger to controversy. Just recently he has led his band down a series of tunnels that have led to physical altercations, rumors about his departure, and stories of Joe Perry quitting the band entirely. Thankfully none of these came true and now they’re back on tour, though you have to wonder if they were just manufactured for promotional purposes or legitimate. Some of these scenarios were quite severe and they act as if they never happened. Maybe the rockers are just more geared for those types of things.
Either way Tyler will take the stage and hopefully give the show some more rock contestants. We stress rock as in rock musicians completely and not just people with mind numbing vocals such as David Cook. Either way the free music the show provides will let us see soon if Tyler has any presence on the choice of candidates the show pursues.
For a refresher, here is a wonderful display of Steven Tyler’s capabilities as a vocalist:
